Prehistory

I think it would be difficult to find any other area of the UK with such amazing archaeological remains as Southwark.  From mesolithic remains – debris from flint tool making – found near to the Old Kent Road, ironically under B&Q, to some of the earliest remains of farming which lies about four metres below present ground level in the areas of  Bankside and Shad Thames.  These remains date from the early Bronze Age and are the remains of ploughed fields preserved under riverine deposits.

Environmental evidence suggests the north of the Borough was farmed during the Iron Age and the early Roman evidence suggests there are likely to be important settlements in the area.
